It’s an exciting time in the automotive
industry right now. It seems that every day, there’s another article related to
autonomous vehicles. Capabilities are increasing quickly, and more and more
cities are welcoming autonomous vehicles to their streets. But there’s one
place that’s been conspicuously absent from those stories: New York. That’s not
the case anymore. Last month, Audi was named as the first company to be awarded
a license for automated vehicle testing
in the state.
Scott Keogh, president of Audi of
America, was excited to share the news. “Audi, with the partnership of
forward-thinking states like New York, are at the forefront of defining the
future of transportation,” he said. “That kind of innovation only happens with
industry and government working hand-in-hand toward a shared goal of safer
roads.”
To celebrate the announcement,
legislators, their staff, members of the media, and others were invited to take
part in rides and demonstrations of Audi Highway Pilot technology – Society of
Automobile Engineers Level 3 automation. This technology enables the autonomous
Audi vehicle to drive at posted highway speeds when specific conditions are
met. For those doubting their resolve to hop into an autonomous vehicle by
themselves, fear not—the test vehicle still includes two trained engineers
among its passengers. They’re tasked with monitoring vehicle systems and
ensuring safety. Thanks to their efforts, and the incredible advancements made
with Audi Highway Pilot technology, the Audi demo vehicle has already logged
thousands of miles safely on limited access highways all across the country.
Innovation has long been at the heart of
