What is AGL?

One of the most important changes coming to the 2018 Toyota Camry when it arrives at Bell Road Toyota is one you can’t see. That doesn’t mean it won’t have a big impact on the quality of your drive. What is AGL, and what does it mean for Phoenix car shoppers?

AGL stands for Automotive Grade Linux. As opposed to the operating system used in many of your car’s systems that aren’t controlled by an engine control unit (ECU). That’s a surprisingly large number of components, with more to come in the years ahead.

Toyota Motor Corporation is a major supporter of this open source Linux-based system, and the 2018 Toyota Camry is the first vehicle to feature AGL. What does it do? Among other things:

     Telematics
     Heads-up display
     Instrument panel
     Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
     Autonomous driving features
     Active safety systems

What are the advantages? Well, you’ll recognize each of these as features your Toyota Camry already has to one degree, or in one form, or another. However, AGL has three main advantages. For one thing, each of those systems should operate smoother than before. For another, the open architecture of Linux should speed needed fixes and get improvements to market faster. Finally, it’s flexible enough to handle cars not only as they are now, but also future Toyota models with more advanced technology. Expect it to be featured in even more new Toyota cars (and other makes and models) very soon.

You’ll see the 2018 Toyota Camry at your Phoenix Toyota dealership very soon. You may not see AGL, but it’ll be there in the background, quietly making your driving experience better and safer.
